In the fall of 2006, I did my doula training and set out on my way to seek families who might need/want some one to help. In December, I did my first birth as a professional, and it was amazing. After just a few more over the next month or two, I was hired on the phone to assist a women wanting to VBAC and she was already 36wks. I educated myself all about the benefits and risks of a VBAC, met with couple, helped them write a birth plan, and low and behold, she ran into some disagreements about her birth wishes, and ultimately hired a homebirth Midwife to assist her! At 40wks and 3 days, she had a 4 1/2 hr labor and waterbirth in her bedroom, that blew my socks off. I had no idea that childbirth could be like that! I was forever changed from that moment forward.
