The Placenta..."You're gonna do what!?!"
So when you birth at home, you have many options available to respect the placenta. Some will bury it and plant a tree or bush over it and that will symbolize that child and how he/she will continue to grow. Makes great fertilizer as well:)
Some will make placenta art, where they will take the placenta on nice paper and stamp the imprint. I haven't done that yet...but I'm sure someday we will.
I've heard of some people eating it. Yea to me that is a bit much. But if that is what you choose to do, I would say it is better than throwing it away. I have learned that if a mom is bleeding too much, you can take a bit of the placenta and put it under her tongue and she will stop bleeding. The placenta is incredibly amazing. Did you ever notice that animals eat it? It is jam pack with all of your hormones and is known to help mom sail through postpartum and also increase her milk supply. Anybody with a history of depression should seriously consider consuming their placenta.
So the best option in my opinion...encapsulation. It is a process of cleaning, steaming, and drying your placenta and then grinding up into a powder form and putting it into capsules. You take 2 capsules, 3 times a day. Some of our mom's have done this and we have seen great results. You are able to ingest your natural hormones and it helps to stabalize all of the changes your body is going through just after a baby is born.
